Omega-3 DHA enriched eggs:
Better health, same great taste
Our research has consistently shown that consuming eggs and meat naturally enriched with our microalgal omega-3 DHA (OmegaPro™) improves peoples health, but if the products don’t taste good, consumers won’t eat them.
That’s where our high quality, fish free oil really stands apart - delivering clean, neutral taste that allows products to be enriched without compromising flavour.
To assess the impact of enriching eggs with OmegaPro on taste, Wirral Sensory Services were commissioned to assess consumer acceptance of omega-3 enriched eggs vs free range standard eggs.
Taste panel overview
The panel consisted of 92 respondents who are regular egg consumers (at least once per week) and who eat scrambled egg at least once every two weeks, with a mix of age, gender and socio-economics. The scrambled egg samples were all prepared with a small knob of butter to make them as close to “homemade” as possible.
The results:
What does this mean for egg producers and retailers?
The results showed there were no significant differences for any of the hedonic attributes tested at 95% confidence. The consumer does not detect any difference between standard and omega-3 enriched eggs. This means that egg producers and retailers can enrich their eggs with our microalgal omega-3 DHA, delivering additional nutritional benefits to their customers without impacting the taste.
These results align with the sensory analysis we commissioned for omega-3 enriched chicken at Wirral Sensory Services.
